Anguilla is a British overseas territory, with a flag resembling those of other British territories and was officially adopted 30 May 1990. However this is not the the first flag to represent Anguilla. The current design re-uses a lot of the previous flag, which was very popular with local Anguillians and was used when Anguilla was an independent nation. The connection to an independent flag is unique among all of the British overseas territories. The previous flag depicted three orange dolphins on a white field above a blue stripe, which provided the modern coat of arms of Anguilla.
The coat of arms consists of three dolphins in a circular formation, which stand for wisdom, friendship, and strength. The white color represents peace, with the light blue representing the sea, faith, youth, and hope. The Union Jack is a symbol of the British Empire and it symbolizes the strong connection between Britain and Anguilla.
