History

The first Antiguan flag was a design that followed most other colonial flags within the British Empire. It had a solid blue background with a small Union Jack in the corner and a coat of arms. The current flag of Antigua and Barbuda has been used since February 1967 after the two islands gained their independence from the British Empire, the design of the flag was created by Antiguan teacher Reginald Samuels.

The black is for the African ancestry of the people, blue symbolizes hope and the Caribbean Sea, the red is for the energy and life of the people. The combination of black, yellow, blue, and white also represents the soil, sun, sea, and sand. The 'V' shape is the symbol for victory. The sun is a symbol of hope for the future after gaining its independence, and its position rising from the horizon symbolizes the beauty of the Caribbean.
